"In The Land Of Grey And Pink" is the third studio album by the British band Caravan, released on April 8, 1971. This album was produced by David Hitchcock and recorded at AIR Studios and Decca Studios in London between September 1970 and January 1971. The album was released under the Deram label and is known for its blend of rock, jazz, and progressive rock elements.

Musical Composition

The album is divided into two sides. The first side features four shorter tracks, including the well-known "Golf Girl" and the title track "In The Land Of Grey And Pink." These songs exhibit Caravan's unique sound, characterized by intricate arrangements and a fusion of various musical styles. The second side is dedicated entirely to "Nine Feet Underground," a lengthy suite that spans approximately twenty-two minutes. This piece consists of eight distinct sections, showcasing the band's ability to weave complex musical themes together.

Band Lineup and Contributions

This album marks the final release featuring the original four-piece lineup of Caravan. The band consisted of guitarist Pye Hastings, bassist Richard Sinclair, keyboardist David Sinclair, and drummer Richard Coughlan. Jimmy Hastings, Pye Hastings' brother, contributed saxophone and flute to the album, continuing his role as a guest musician from previous releases.

Recording and Production

David Hitchcock's production work on this album played a crucial role in shaping its sound. The engineering team included John Punter at AIR Studios and David Grinsted along with Derek Varnals at Decca Studios. The cover illustration was created by Anne Marie Anderson, while Joe McGillicuddy handled the design and art direction.
