Focus II: An Exploration of Dutch Symphonic Rock

Focus II, also released internationally as "Moving Waves," is the second studio album by the Dutch band Focus. It was launched in October 1971 under the Imperial label. The album's recording took place between April 13 and May 14, 1971, at Sound Techniques and Morgan Studios, with Mike Vernon serving as the producer. This album marked a significant transition for the band, following the departure of original members Martijn Dresden and Hans Cleuver. New recruits Cyriel Havermans on bass and Pierre van der Linden on drums joined the lineup, contributing to the band's evolving sound.

Musical Composition

The album features a blend of rock and symphonic elements. One of its standout tracks is "Hocus Pocus," a hard rock piece notable for its unique incorporation of yodeling and scat singing by Thijs van Leer. This track was released as a single in July 1971 in the Netherlands and later gained international attention, reaching number 9 on the US charts and number 20 in the UK. The album also includes other shorter tracks like "Le Clochard" and "Janis," which showcase the band’s diverse musical capabilities.

On the second side, the centerpiece of the album is the extensive suite titled "Eruption," which lasts over 22 minutes. This suite is structured into several sections, such as "Orfeus" and "Endless Road," and draws inspiration from the opera "Euridice," composed by Jacopo Peri. The intricate arrangement highlights the band's proficiency in blending classical music influences with rock, creating a distinct sound that characterizes their work.

Commercial Performance

Focus II achieved commercial success, reaching number 2 on the UK charts and number 4 in the Netherlands. In the US, it peaked at number 8. The album's combination of rock energy and symphonic elements resonated with a broad audience, contributing to its favorable reception.
