In The Region Of The Summer Stars
Enid is a British band formed in 1974, led by composer and keyboardist Robert John Godfrey. Their debut album, "In The Region Of The Summer Stars," was released in February 1976 by Buk Records. This work emerged after a series of recordings in 1975, marking the band’s transition to a primarily instrumental sound following the death of their original singer, Peter Roberts, in early 1975.
The album is structured as a through-composed symphonic rock suite that loosely follows the sequence of tarot cards. Each track title corresponds to a tarot theme, including "The Fool," "Death, The Reaper," "The Lovers," "The Devil," and "The Last Judgement." The final track, "In The Region Of The Summer Stars," encapsulates the album's overarching concept. The shifting from vocal to instrumental compositions significantly shaped the album's character.
Musically, the album incorporates elements of rock, progressive rock, and symphonic rock. The instrumentation features a blend of traditional rock instruments and orchestral elements. Key contributors include Glenn Tollett on keyboards and tuba, Neil Kavanagh on bass and flute, and Francis Lickerish on guitar. The presence of trumpet solos by Dave Hancock and piano solos by Robert John Godfrey adds to the album's rich texture. The drumming and percussion, played by David Storey and Robbie Dobson, provide a solid rhythmic foundation throughout the album.
The album was produced by John Sinclair, who played a crucial role in shaping the sound of this release. The recording process took place during 1975, leading to a cohesive album that reflects the band’s vision. The choice of a tarot card theme was unique and offered an artistic framework for the music. An earlier title inspired by the same concept was abandoned after another artist, Steve Hackett, released an album with that name in 1975.
"In The Region Of The Summer Stars" exemplifies the transition of Enid into an instrumental act and showcases a blend of rock and orchestral music. The album is available in vinyl format, released in 1976.
