Byzantium: A Unique Blend of Rock and Country

In 1972, the English band Byzantium released their self-titled debut album on A&M Records. This album was recorded at Trident Studios in London, a location known for its high-quality productions. The band was formed by Jamie Rubinstein, who had previously fronted the group Ora. Rubinstein contributed significantly to the album, writing most of the eight tracks included.

Musical Composition and Style

Byzantium’s music merges elements of rock, country rock, and progressive rock. The album opens with "What Is Happening?", which sets an introspective tone. The track "I Am A Stranger To My Life" features compelling guitar work from Nico Ramsden, who also plays steel guitar and piano on other tracks. "Come Fair One" presents a softer acoustic vibe, showcasing Jamie Rubinstein's acoustic guitar skills. The album's sound is enriched by various guest musicians, including a brass section led by Derek Wadsworth and Roy Young.

Each member of the band brought distinct elements to the project. Chas Jankel, who played electric guitar and provided lead vocals on "Why Or Maybe It's Because," later became known for his work with Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Steve Corduner handled drums and percussion, while Robin Lamble played bass guitar and contributed to the songwriting process. This collaboration of talents resulted in a diverse musical palette that appeals to fans of several genres.

Production Details

The album was produced by Stuart Taylor, with Robin Sylvester serving as the producer and arranger for the strings and brass sections. The engineering was handled by Roy Baker, known for his work in the rock genre. The album was pressed on A&M's distinctive mustard-colored vinyl and included a poster, adding to its collectible nature.

Byzantium’s debut album serves as an interesting example of the early 1970s music scene in the UK, blending various influences to create a unique listening experience. The album was released in 1972.
