In 1972, the English band Byzantium released their self-titled debut album on A&M Records. This album was recorded at Trident Studios in London, a location known for its high-quality productions. The band was formed by Jamie Rubinstein, who had previously fronted the group Ora. Rubinstein contributed significantly to the album, writing most of the eight tracks included.
