Introduction to Atlantic Ocean

Atlantic Ocean, a Swedish band formed from the remnants of The Quints, released their album Tranquillity Bay in 1969. Lead by Gregory Allan Fitzpatrick, an American multi-instrumentalist, the group blended various musical styles. Fitzpatrick had moved to Sweden in 1967 after busking in Finland. At that time, he performed under the stage name Göran Ahlin due to work permit issues.

Recording Details

Tranquillity Bay was recorded in September 1969 at Philips Sound Studios in Stockholm. The album was released by Love Records, a Finnish label, marking an early collaboration with Sweden's "progg" music scene. The album features nine tracks, including brief pieces like "What Is The Time," and the lengthy closing track "Weather Inc. Snow, Wind, Sun," which lasts over 19 minutes. The music incorporates elements of rock, honky-tonk, and influences from African and Latin music, all woven together with rich vocal harmonies.

Personnel and Instrumentation

The lineup for this album included Gregory Allan Fitzpatrick on bass, guitar, and piano, as well as contributing to design, photography, and production. Staffan Stenström provided bass, guitar, and vocals, while Jan Bandel played drums. Johnny Mowinckel contributed electric piano, and Björn J:son Lindh added flute, saxophone, and violin. Sten Bergman played organ and piano, enriching the album's diverse sound palette.

Post-Atlantic Ocean Career

After the release of Tranquillity Bay, Fitzpatrick went on to form Handgjort, a group that explored Indian music. He later transitioned into production work, contributing to the synth-pop duo Adolphson & Falk. Fitzpatrick was also among the first musicians in Sweden to incorporate synthesizers into his work, demonstrating his adaptability in the evolving music scene.
