Recuerdos De Mi Tierra
Mezquita's debut album, "Recuerdos De Mi Tierra," was released in 1979 under Chapa Discos, catalog number HS-35027. Originating from Córdoba, Andalusia, Mezquita emerged from the earlier band Expresión. This album is a significant entry in the Rock Andaluz genre, blending flamenco influences with progressive rock elements. The band features José Rafa García on lead electric and acoustic guitars, vocals, and songwriting. Fernando "Randy" López provides bass guitar, percussion, and vocals, while Francisco "Roscka" López handles keyboards, synthesizers, and vocals. Rafael Zorrilla, known as "Peluca," plays drums and percussion.
The album was produced by Vicente "Mariscal" Romero, a prominent figure in the Spanish rock scene. The sound engineer for this project was Antonio Morales. "Recuerdos De Mi Tierra" was recorded at Estudios Audiofilm in Madrid. The album features a guest string section, which includes violins by Juan Ferrara and Santiago Crespo, and cello by Manuel López. The string arrangements were crafted by José Juan Almela. This collaboration adds a lush sonic texture to the album.
The album consists of six tracks, each showcasing the band's unique sound. The title track, "Recuerdos De Mi Tierra," is an 8-minute epic that encapsulates the album's themes. Other notable tracks include "El Bizco De Los Patios" and the ballad "Desde Que Somos Dos," which features intricate arrangements. "Ara Buza (Dame Un Beso)" draws on Arabic musical influences, while "El Suicidio" serves as a progressive rock tour-de-force lasting seven minutes. The album concludes with "Obertura En Si Bemol," an instrumental piece that showcases the band's classical influences.
Alongside other groups like Triana and Guadalquivir, Mezquita's sound represents a fusion of traditional flamenco and hard rock. This distinct blend is characterized by deep flamenco cante jondo, Moorish scales, and heavy guitar riffs reminiscent of bands like Deep Purple. The combination of analog synths, Mellotron textures, and orchestral strings creates a rich listening experience.
