Psychonaut
In 1971, Brainticket released their second studio album, "Psychonaut," through the Durium label. This project marked a transition from their debut album, "Cottonwoodhill," which had garnered attention in the European underground music scene. The band consisted of a diverse lineup, led by Belgian multi-instrumentalist Joel Vandroogenbroeck, who played a variety of instruments including the Hammond organ, sitar, and electronic oscillator.
"Psychonaut" presents a unique blend of genres, incorporating elements of electronic music, rock, and psychedelia. The album features an array of instruments that contribute to its distinctive sound. The presence of exotic percussion instruments like the tabla and tbilat enhances the Eastern raga influence. Jane Free's lead vocals provide a hypnotic quality, interweaving with the swirling sounds of the Hammond organ and sitar. The production includes ambient avant-garde electronics that create a cosmic atmosphere throughout the album.
The album opens with "From Another Planet," a brief cosmic prologue that sets the stage for the subsequent tracks. The centerpiece, "Radagacuca," stretches over seven minutes and showcases the album's raga-psych elements. Other notable tracks include "Watchin' You," an acid-groove piece, and "Coc'O Mary," which takes listeners on a space-rock journey lasting over six minutes.
Recorded at Durium Studios in Milan, the album was engineered by Piero Bisleri and Ugo Scerbo. The production reflects the band's experimental approach, emphasizing electronic sound effects and innovative arrangements. The gatefold artwork, designed by Umberto Santucci, complements the album's artistic vision.
With "Psychonaut," Brainticket ventured into new musical territories, blending various influences and creating a rich tapestry of sound. This exploration is evident in the album's diverse instrumentation and compositional structure. The album was released in 1971 with the catalog number Durium ms A 77284.
