Introduction to Toe Fat

Toe Fat is the self-titled debut studio album by the British band Toe Fat. Released in May 1970, it came out under EMI's Parlophone label. The album blends heavy blues-rock with elements of progressive rock, showcasing the band's diverse musical influences.

Band Formation and Background

Toe Fat was formed by singer Cliff Bennett, who had previously led Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers. The lineup also included former members of The Gods. Multi-instrumentalist Ken Hensley, drummer Lee Kerslake, and bassist John Glascock rounded out the group. Notably, Glascock was miscredited on the original album sleeve as "John Konas." Hensley and Kerslake later joined Uriah Heep, while Glascock became the bassist for Jethro Tull.

Production Details

The album was produced by Jonathan Peel, with engineering handled by Peter Mew at the famous Abbey Road Studios. The artwork for the album cover was created by the design group Hipgnosis. Their surrealist approach is depicted through imagery of figures on a beach with toes for heads, adding a distinct visual element to the release.

Musical Style and Tracks

Musically, Toe Fat features a mix of original compositions and covers. One of the standout tracks is a heavy rendition of "Bad Side Of The Moon," originally by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Other tracks include "Working Nights," "That's My Love For You," "The Wherefors And The Whys," and "But I'm Wrong." The album reflects the band's heavy blues roots while also incorporating progressive rock sensibilities.
