Aktuala
Aktuala is the self-titled debut studio album from the Italian avant-garde world-folk collective Aktuala. Released in 1973 on Pino Massara's Bla Bla label, this album marks an important moment in the intersection of various musical traditions. Formed in Milan in 1972 by Walter and Laura Maioli, the group blends Mediterranean, North African, Middle Eastern, and Asian influences with free jazz and avant-garde rock.
The album features a diverse array of traditional acoustic and non-Western folk instruments. Walter Maioli plays the Arabic oboe, bamboo flutes, piccolo, harmonica, and whistles. Lino "Capra" Vaccina contributes with Moroccan bongos, African drums, tabla, gong, xylophone, and musical bow. Laura Maioli plays the tambura, while Antonio Cerantola adds acoustic guitar and balalaika. Daniele Cavallanti rounds out the ensemble with alto and tenor saxophones and clarinet. This eclectic instrumentation creates a rich sound that is both organic and trance-inducing.
The album consists of six instrumental pieces that explore various themes and moods. Tracks such as "When The Light Began" and "Alef's Dance" exhibit intricate rhythms and melodic lines. The compositions often shift in tempo and texture, reflecting the improvisational nature of the group. Free improvisation is a key aspect of their style, allowing for spontaneous and dynamic musical conversations among the musicians.
Aktuala draws inspiration from a multitude of cultural backgrounds. The fusion of elements from different regions creates a unique sound palette. The rhythmic complexity of African drumming is interwoven with Middle Eastern melodies. This blend not only highlights the versatility of the musicians but also showcases the interconnectedness of global musical traditions.
Aktuala was released as a vinyl LP in 1973, under catalog number BBL 11054. The album reflects a time of experimentation in music, where boundaries were pushed, and genres merged. The work of Aktuala contributes to the rich tapestry of the Italian avant-garde music scene.
