Brot + Spiele
Brot + Spiele, translated as "Bread and Games," is the third studio album by the German band Munju. Released in 1980 under the Schneeball label, this album merges several genres, including jazz-rock, progressive fusion, and Krautrock. It reflects the band's unique sound and approach to music during this era.
The album was recorded between July 29 and August 7, 1980, at Sunrise Studios in Kirchberg, Switzerland. Sound engineers Etienne Conod and Robert Nagel were responsible for capturing the band's eclectic sound. The lineup for this album includes Dieter Kaudel on electric and acoustic guitars, oud, and vocals, Wolfgang Salomon on electric bass and Hohner D6 Clavinet, and Thomas Römer on drums and vocals. Fred Lamberson, an American saxophonist and flutist, joined the band for this release, contributing tenor sax and flute.
Brot + Spiele features eight tracks that blend sharp jazz-rock fusion with New Wave energy and funk grooves. The lyrics are socio-political, delivered in German, addressing contemporary issues. The album also incorporates Middle Eastern influences, particularly through the use of the oud. Noteworthy guest musicians enrich the sound, including Christian Burchard from Embryo on drums and vibraphone, Nikel Pallat from Ton Steine Scherben providing spoken voice on "Revue Im Niemandsland," and Peter Krause on congas.
The album is famous for its elaborate gatefold LP packaging. It includes a full board game titled "Band On Tour." This game features a printed game board, 72 "Gig or Tour" playing cards, and instruction sheets. This creative addition enhances the album's appeal, offering listeners an interactive experience alongside the music.
Among the tracks, "Kantstrasse" and "Computer" stand out for their intricate compositions and rhythmic complexity. "Revue Im Niemandsland" features the spoken voice of Nikel Pallat, adding a distinctive layer to the album's narrative. Other notable tracks include "Armadillo," "Fliegen," and "Cosmische Müllabfuhr," each contributing to the album's diverse sonic landscape.
Brot + Spiele was released in 1980 on vinyl, specifically as an LP album. The catalog numbers for this release are 0024 and 0022 from the Schneeball collective label. The combination of innovative music and creative packaging makes this album a unique entry in the Krautrock genre.
