Recording Details

The album was recorded during two lengthy sessions in May 1969 at Recorded Sound Studios in London. Each of these sessions lasted 12 hours, allowing the duo to fully explore their musical ideas. The production was handled by Peter Shertser and Ian Sippen, who also contributed the liner notes. The engineering team included H. Day and Terry Stewart, while the photography for the album cover was done by David Wedgbury.

Mick Hutchinson plays lead and rhythm electric guitars, slightly amplified acoustic guitars, bass guitar, bongos, timpani, and piano. Andy Clark complements this with the Hammond organ, grand piano, flute, tenor and alto saxophones, bagpipe chanter, drums, and percussion, as well as vocals. This wide array of instruments contributes to an eclectic mix of styles, blending acid rock improvisation with Indian raga modal structures and elements of free jazz.

A=MH² features five extended compositions that highlight the duo's improvisational skills and musical versatility. The album opens with "Improvisation On A Modal Scale," which runs for ten minutes. Another significant piece is the acoustic raga titled "Acapulco Gold." The album reaches its climactic point with the monumental "Improvisation On An Indian Scale," which lasts 13 minutes. Each track showcases different aspects of their creative expressions, from intricate melodies to complex rhythms.
