Released on December 7, 1973, Brain Salad Surgery is the fourth studio album by the British progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer. This album marks a significant milestone for the band as it was the first release on their newly established label, Manticore Records. Recorded between June and September of the same year, the album was laid down at Olympic and Advision Studios in London and mixed at AIR Studios in October.

Musical Composition

The album opens with "Jerusalem," an arrangement of a hymn by Hubert Parry composed for a poem by William Blake. This track features Carl Palmer on gongs and timpani, while Keith Emerson plays the Moog synthesizer. When released as a single, "Jerusalem" faced controversy as the BBC banned it from airplay due to its rock arrangement, deeming it irreverent. It did not achieve chart success.

Another significant element of the album is the extensive "Karn Evil 9" suite, which is divided into four parts and runs nearly thirty minutes, making it the longest studio recording in Emerson, Lake & Palmer's discography. The lyrics for this suite were co-written by Greg Lake and Peter Sinfield, known for his work with King Crimson.
