Without Reservations
"Without Reservations" is the debut studio album by Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, released in August 1967 on the Parlophone label. The band, fronted by the Shulman brothers—Derek, Phil, and Ray—was emerging from the British R&B scene. Their sound during this period incorporated elements of rock, pop rock, and soul, influenced by artists like Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding.
The album was produced by Derek "Dave" Paramor, who played a significant role in shaping its sound. Liner notes for the record were provided by Alan Freeman, a prominent British radio DJ. The album features a mix of original songs and covers, including a rendition of Sam Cooke's "Amen." This blend of material showcases the band's versatility and their ability to interpret established hits while contributing their own songwriting.
Among the original tracks, "Teacher Teacher" stands out, credited to the Shulman brothers and singer Simon Dupree. Other original songs like "Get Off My Bach" and "Who Cares" were co-written with songwriter Reg King. These tracks reflect the band's early songwriting efforts and their growth as musicians. The mixture of styles and influences on the album indicates their transition from R&B to more progressive sounds that would later characterize their subsequent projects.
"Without Reservations" was released in a competitive market, coinciding with the rise of landmark albums like "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Despite its engaging content, the album did not chart upon release. However, the band achieved greater recognition shortly after, with their UK top-10 hit single "Kites," which came out in October 1967, just a few months later.
The album was produced in a vinyl format, which was standard for the time. It remains a part of the Parlophone catalog, a label known for its diverse range of music during the 1960s. The production quality reflects the era's recording techniques, contributing to the album's distinct sound.
