Je Suis...
Kashmir, a Swiss duo formed in the late 1970s, released their album "Je Suis..." in 1979. Composed of keyboardist and vocalist Patrice Guenat and singer-composer Henry Dubelly, the band was active until 1982. The album was recorded at Mountain Studio in Montreux, Switzerland, a location known for its high-quality production. Mixing was done by David Richards, an engineer who collaborated with notable acts such as Queen and David Bowie.
"Je Suis..." embodies a blend of rock, progressive rock, and electronic influences. The sound draws comparisons to artists like Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre. Synthesizers and steady drum patterns form the backbone of the album, complemented by symphonic instrumental passages. Tracks like "Desert Bleu" and "Alarme!" highlight the duo's ability to create atmospheric soundscapes, while "Go!" extends over ten minutes, providing an immersive listening experience.
The album was initially released internationally under the title "Alarme!" on the Kiswell label. For the Swiss market, it was issued with the alternate title "Je Suis...". This dual-release strategy reflects the band's ambition to reach different audiences while maintaining their artistic vision. The album's gatefold vinyl format adds an element of physical appeal, making it a collectible item for fans of the genre.
The opening track, "Desert Bleu," sets the tone with its ethereal synth layers, followed by the title track "Je Suis...," which showcases the duo's lyrical and melodic strengths. The longer pieces, such as "Linear," allow for expansive exploration of themes and motifs, typical of the progressive rock genre. "Slowly" and "6H30" provide a contrast with their more concise structures, demonstrating the band's versatility.
Despite their brief career, Kashmir left a distinct mark on the Swiss music scene. Their combination of electronic rock and progressive elements in "Je Suis..." offers a unique listening experience. The album was released in 1979 and recorded at Mountain Studio in Montreux, Switzerland.
