Release Overview

"Sky 3" is the third studio album by the English-Australian progressive classical-rock ensemble Sky. Released in March 1981 under the Ariola label, it is cataloged as ASAL 1011 and ARLH 5030. This album marks the first appearance of jazz keyboardist Steve Gray, who replaced Francis Monkman. The album was recorded at the renowned EMI Abbey Road Studios in London during 1980 and 1981. Upon release, it achieved a peak position of #3 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Silver.

Musical Composition

The album features a blend of progressive rock, classical influences, and jazz fusion. It opens with a brief introduction titled "The Grace," which sets a tranquil tone. This is followed by "Chiropodie No. 1," an energetic piece that showcases the band's dynamic range. The classic "Sarabande" by George Frideric Handel is reinterpreted with a contemporary flair. Tristan Fry contributes a seven-minute percussion piece called "Connecting Rooms," which highlights his skill on various instruments, including marimba and vibraphone.

Instrumentation and Collaboration

John Williams, a celebrated classical guitarist, plays both Ovation and Fleta guitars, as well as a Gibson Les Paul. He is joined by Steve Gray, who plays the Steinway Grand Piano, harpsichord, and a variety of synthesizers, including the Oberheim OB-1 and the Prophet-5. Kevin Peek adds his touch with Ovation classical and acoustic guitars, alongside Fender Stratocaster and Gibson L5S electric guitars. Herbie Flowers rounds out the ensemble on bass guitar, double bass, and tuba, while Tristan Fry provides the percussion elements.

Production Details

The album was produced by Sky along with Tony Clark and Haydn Bendall, with mastering handled by Malcolm Davies. The collaborative effort in production and composition brings a rich texture to the album, making it a multi-faceted listening experience.

Track Highlights

Among the standout tracks are "Sister Rose," which showcases Gray's piano work, and the Latin-flavored "Meheeco," which brings a distinct cultural influence to the album. The closing track, "Keep Me Safe And Keep Me Warm, Shelter Me From Darkness," offers a soothing outro, rounding out the listening experience.
