Nightbird
In 1978, The Kaplan Brothers released their album "Nightbird" under the Quintron Record Co. label. This album was recorded around 1975 and features a unique blend of outsider psychedelic rock and cosmic progressive elements. The Kaplan Brothers, comprising Ron and Donnie Kaplan along with their siblings Dick, Ed, and Jack Kaplan, hailed from the Chicago and Des Plaines area in Illinois.
"Nightbird" is notable for its intricate arrangements and rich instrumentation. The album prominently features a white Mellotron M-400, which was purchased from Mike Pinder of The Moody Blues. This instrument contributes to the surreal sound that characterizes the record. The use of early analog rhythm machines, phase-shifted guitars, synthesizer swells, and layered vocal harmonies from the Kaplan brothers creates a complex auditory experience. The album is often categorized into various genres, including rock, psychedelic rock, and progressive rock, reflecting its eclectic nature.
The album consists of nine tracks that delve into various themes. One standout piece is the six-minute cover of King Crimson's "Epitaph," which showcases the Mellotron's capabilities. Other tracks like "Ode To Life" and "Vodka And Caviare" further emphasize the group's distinctive style. The title track, "Night Bird," serves as an ambitious suite that encapsulates the album's essence. Each song contributes to an overarching atmosphere that is both cosmic and introspective.
"Nightbird" has gained acclaim among vinyl collectors and Mellotron enthusiasts. Its status as a private-press release adds to its allure, making it a sought-after artifact within the music community. The album is frequently mentioned in resources like Patrick Lundborg's "The Acid Archives" and "Planet Mellotron," which discuss its unique position within the broader landscape of psychedelic and progressive rock.
The album was cataloged as QS-1001 by Quintron Record Co.
