Recording Process

The album was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales. The recording sessions took place over three weeks, from June 9 to June 29, 1975. During these sessions, the band adopted a unique approach to instrumentation, with Hugh Banton playing bass parts on organ pedals. This adaptation was necessary due to the absence of a dedicated bassist in the lineup. The engineering work was handled by Pat Moran, and the mastering was done by George Peckham.

"The Undercover Man" opens the album with a runtime of 7 minutes and 23 seconds, followed by "Scorched Earth," which extends to 9 minutes and 49 seconds. The second side features "Arrow" at 9 minutes and 45 seconds, culminating in "The Sleepwalkers," which lasts for 10 minutes and 30 seconds. Each track showcases the band's complex arrangements and Hammill's distinctive vocal style.
