Art Zoyd 3, also known as Symphonie Pour Le Jour Où Brûleront Les Cités, is the debut studio album by French avant-garde chamber rock band Art Zoyd. Released in 1976, the album was recorded at Studio de Valenciennes in May of that year. It was released under the private label AZ Production, catalog number AZ 001. The album features a unique blend of various musical influences, including 20th-century classical modernism and progressive rock.

Creative Lineup

The band’s lineup consists of Gérard Hourbette on violin, viola, and jazzo-flûte, who is also the primary composer. Thierry Zaboïtzeff contributes bass guitar, percussion, and vocals. Alain Eckert plays electric guitar, percussion, and vocals, while Jean-Pierre Soarez plays B-flat trumpet and percussion. This diverse instrumentation helps distinguish the album's sound.

The album is structured into two main sections. Side A and the first part of Side B comprise a three-movement suite titled "Symphonie Pour Le Jour Où Brûleront Les Cités." The movements are "Brigades Spéciales," "Masques," and "Simulacres." The second part of Side B features a two-part piece "Deux Images De La Cité Imbécile," which includes "Les Fourmis," composed by Rocco Fernandez, and "Scènes De Carnaval."

Produced by Michel Besset, the album's engineering was handled by François Artige and Jean-Pierre Grasset. The cover art was created by H2L Publicité Valenciennes. The album's production choices underscore its experimental approach, as it forgoes a traditional drum kit in favor of more unconventional percussion methods.

Art Zoyd is recognized as a co-founder of the Rock in Opposition (RIO) movement. Their music combines dark chamber rock with the intensity of the Zeuhl genre, influenced by bands like Magma.
