Pholas Dactylus, an Italian progressive rock band, emerged in 1972 near Milan. The group took its name from a genus of boring clam, known for its unique adaptability. Their only album, "Concerto Delle Menti," was released in 1973 under Magma Records. This label, operated by Vittorio De Scalzi from the band New Trolls, was pivotal in promoting progressive rock in Italy.

The Album's Concept

"Concerto Delle Menti" is a conceptual album divided into two parts. The music is inspired by a visionary poem that explores apocalyptic themes through both biblical and mythological imagery. This narrative serves as the backbone of the album, which features a combination of spoken word and instrumental music. Rather than traditional singing, the piece is narrated, creating a unique auditory experience.

Instrumentation and Composition

The lineup for this album included Paolo Carelli on vocals and narration, Eleino Colladet on guitar, and a dual keyboard setup featuring Valentino Galbusera and Maurizio Pancotti. The rhythm section comprised Rinaldo Linati on bass and Giampiero Nava on drums. This ensemble created a rich tapestry of sound, blending complex arrangements typical of progressive rock with the distinct narrative style of the spoken word.

Live Performances and Development
