Armageddon
"Armageddon" is the debut studio album by the Greek band P.L.J. Band, released in 1982 under the Vertigo label. The band was formed by Pavlos Kikrilis, Lavrentis Machairitsas, and Jimmy Vasalakis. The album was recorded at ERA Studios in Athens and is presented in a vinyl LP format. The album features a mix of rock genres, including space rock, psychedelic rock, and progressive rock, as well as elements of krautrock.
The lineup of P.L.J. Band includes key musicians Lavrentis Machairitsas on lead vocals, 12-string guitar, and keyboards; Antonis Mitzelos on lead and acoustic guitars; Pavlos Kikrilis on classical and rhythm guitars, as well as narration; Jimmy Vasalakis on bass guitar and backing vocals; and Tolis Skamajouras on drums and percussion. Spoken-word recitation is provided by Hellen Aristidis, adding a unique dimension to the album's soundscape.
"Armageddon" serves as a concept album, drawing heavily from biblical themes, specifically the Book of Ezekiel and the Book of Revelation. The album is characterized by its use of ritualistic Byzantine scales and haunting vocal chants. These elements merge with swirling synthesizer atmospheres and psychedelic guitar solos, reminiscent of bands like Pink Floyd and Aphrodite's Child. The track "Ezekiel" is a standout, utilizing these themes effectively.
The album was released in a limited quantity, with approximately 500 copies available. This limited run was influenced by censorship controversies at the time. Following "Armageddon," the band transitioned to Greek lyrics and later adopted the name Termites (Τερμίτες). This change marked a new phase in their musical journey.
The album consists of nine tracks, including "Intro," "Woe!," and "Isolation." Each track contributes to the overarching apocalyptic theme. The musicianship displayed throughout the album reflects the band's diverse influences and commitment to their artistic vision. The combination of different musical styles creates a rich listening experience that unfolds over several layers.
