Released in October 1969, "Ark 2" is the debut album by British band Flaming Youth, under the Fontana label (catalog STL 5533). This project marks a significant moment in the career of Phil Collins, who, at just 18 years old, offered his first professional recording and lead vocals. Collins would later rise to fame with Genesis, but his role in this album reveals his early talent as a drummer and vocalist.

Concept and Inspiration

"Ark 2" is a concept album inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landing in July 1969. The album narrates a story of humanity's evacuation from an Earth in decline, setting sail on a colossal spaceship named "Ark 2" in search of a new home among the stars. This narrative ambition is complemented by the distinctive sound that blends psychedelic rock, heavy fuzz guitars, and orchestral elements.

Musical Elements

The album consists of nine tracks, including the single "Guide Me, Orion" and the 13-minute suite "The Planets," which explores themes from Mars to Neptune, echoing Gustav Holst's classical work. Brian Chatton's swirling Hammond organ and multi-part choral harmonies enrich the listening experience. The album features Collins on tracks such as "Changes" and "Space Child," where his vocal prowess is on display alongside his drumming.

Recording and Production

Recorded at De Lane Lea Studios in London, "Ark 2" was produced by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley. The album's sound is further enhanced by the engineering work of Barry Ainsworth. The gatefold artwork by John Constable features a stained glass montage, and the photography by Gered Mankowitz adds a visual appeal to the package.

Live Premiere

Flaming Youth premiered "Ark 2" live at the London Planetarium, an event that showcased the album's thematic elements and musical complexity. This performance highlighted the band's ambition to merge rock music with theatrical storytelling.
