Hamburger Concerto
"Hamburger Concerto" is the fourth studio album by the Dutch progressive rock band Focus. It was released in May 1974 under the Polydor label, catalog number 2442 124, with distribution by Atco/Sire in North America. The album was recorded over a span of three months, from January to March 1974, at Olympic Sound Studios in London. Mike Vernon produced the album, while Bob Hall handled the engineering duties.
Following the departure of drummer Pierre van der Linden, Focus welcomed English drummer Colin Allen into the fold. Allen was previously a member of Stone the Crows and played with John Mayall. The remaining lineup includes Thijs van Leer, who plays keyboards, flute, accordion, and provides vocals; Jan Akkerman, who contributes guitars, lute, and timpani; and Bert Ruiter, responsible for bass, harp, and triangle.
The album features a variety of compositions that highlight the band's progressive rock style. The first side includes tracks such as "Delitiae Musicae," "Harem Scarem," and "La Cathedrale de Strasbourg." Each piece showcases the individual talents of the band members, blending intricate melodies and rhythms. The second side is dedicated to the title suite "Hamburger Concerto," which spans approximately 20 minutes and is divided into six parts. This suite incorporates the 18th-century "St. Anthony Chorale," which is often associated with composers Haydn and Brahms.
The album's photography and cover art were created by Graham Hughes. The visual presentation complements the musical content, offering an artistic reflection of the band's progressive ethos.
"Hamburger Concerto" was recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, a notable location known for hosting various artists during the 1970s. The studio setting contributed to the album's polished sound and intricate arrangements.
