Pollen
Pulsar, a French band, released their debut album "Pollen" in 1975 under Kingdom Records, an English label. This album marks an important moment in the band's career as they were the first French group to sign with this label. "Pollen" is characterized by its blend of electronic, rock, and progressive rock elements, showcasing the band's experimental and ambient influences.
The album features a unique combination of instruments, including the Mellotron, ARP synthesizer, and effects-treated guitars. The band's sound is enriched by the use of flute and string ensembles, providing a diverse auditory experience. All lyrics are sung in French, which adds a distinct cultural layer to the music. The band members have cited influences from notable artists such as Pink Floyd and King Crimson, as well as classical composer Gustav Mahler.
The album opens with the eponymous track "Pulsar," which sets the stage for the subsequent compositions. "Apaisement" follows with a more serene tone for its 7:30 duration. One of the standout tracks is "Puzzle/Omen," featuring a complex structure that lasts 8 minutes, showcasing the band's progressive rock influences. The title track "Pollen" concludes the album with an extensive thirteen-minute exploration of sound, allowing for a deep immersion into the band's musical vision.
Pulsar consists of several key members: Philippe Roman on bass and vocals, Victor Bosch on drums and percussion, Gilbert Gandil on guitars and vocals, Rolland Richard on flute and synthesizer, Jacques Roman on organ and piano, and François Artaud, who contributed lyrics for "Omen." The album was produced by Diagram and Xavier Dubuc, with arrangements composed by the band.
"Pollen" was released as a vinyl LP, which was the predominant format for music albums in the mid-1970s. The physical format allows listeners to experience the album in its intended analog sound quality, contributing to the immersive qualities of the music.
