In 1977, the French band Hydravion released their self-titled debut album on the Cobra label. This release, catalog number COB 37.008, features a blend of electronic music and rock, defined by its space rock and experimental influences. The recording took place at Studio Du Chesnay near Versailles, with sound engineer Philippe Besombes at the helm.

Musical Composition and Style

Hydravion's sound is characterized by a unique combination of synthesizers and hard rock elements. Philippe Besombes plays a variety of synthesizers, including the ARP 2600, VCS3/AKS, Minimoog, and Korg instruments. He also contributes guitars, vocals, and acts as the recording engineer. The album intertwines sequencer-driven Berlin School electronics with ambient soundscapes, creating an atmospheric listening experience.

The opening track "Metropolitain" utilizes field recordings from the Paris Métro, recorded with a portable Nagra recorder. This innovative approach blends urban sounds with driving sequencers. Following this is the ten-minute composition "Triste Fin," which explores deeper sonic territories. The second side features notable tracks such as the melodic "L'Hydravion D'Argent," the classical-electronic fusion "Etude En Do," and the hard-rocking "J'ai Pas Le Temps."

Contributions and Collaborations

Hydravion consists of several key musicians. Christ Saint Roch is responsible for bass guitar and synth-bass, while Cooky Rhinoceros and Patrick Verbeke provide electric guitar contributions. Dominique Esnault and Pierre Bataillet handle drums and percussion, respectively. Special effects are crafted by Christian Werbrouck, with Jean-Marc Galicia serving as assistant engineer. Gérard Ruffin contributes photography for the album's artwork.
