Introduction to Mythos

Mythos is a self-titled debut album by the Berlin-based band Mythos, released in 1972 on the Ohr label. The album was cataloged as OMM 556019. This release marks a significant entry into the Krautrock and space rock genres, showcasing the band's unique sound that blends various musical elements.

Recording and Production

The album was recorded in late 1971 and early 1972 at Dierks Studios in Stommeln, Germany. The production was overseen by Dieter Dierks, known for his work in the progressive rock scene. The studio's innovative techniques contributed to the album's rich soundscapes, merging acoustic and electronic instrumentation. The band comprised multi-instrumentalist Stephan Kaske, bassist Harald Weiße, and drummer Thomas Hildebrand, who had previously played with Metropolis.

Musical Composition

Mythos incorporates elements of electronic music and rock, with influences from early Pink Floyd and Ash Ra Tempel. The album opens with "Mythoett," an adaptation of a Handel minuet featuring acoustic flutes. The following track, "Oriental Journey," is an 18-minute suite that melds raga-rock with heavier riffs, demonstrating the band's versatility. This is followed by "Hero's Death," which contrasts the lighter elements with a more aggressive sound.

Side B Exploration

Side B is dedicated entirely to the 17-minute epic titled "Encyclopedia Terrae." This multi-part track explores themes of ecology, space travel, and futuristic concepts. The combination of sitar and synthesizer creates a diverse sound palette, allowing for both intricate melodies and expansive sonic landscapes.

Cover Design

The album's cover art was designed by Gil Funccius, adding to the visual appeal of the release. The artwork complements the album's themes, reflecting the cosmic and ecological motifs present in the music.

Conclusion

Mythos serves as an important example of the Krautrock movement, blending diverse influences into a cohesive sound. The album was released in 1972 and is available in vinyl format.
