By The Way
Frumpy's third album, By The Way, was released in July 1972 on the Vertigo label. This German band was known for its unique blend of rock genres, particularly Krautrock and progressive rock. The album was recorded in March 1972 at Windrose-Dumont-Time-Studio in Hamburg. The lineup during this period included Inga Rumpf on vocals and acoustic guitar, Karl-Heinz Schott on bass, Carsten Bohn on drums, and Rainer Baumann on guitar.
By The Way features a diverse mix of musical styles. The opening track, "Goin' To The Country," sets a rhythmic tone with its engaging tempo. The title track, "By The Way," extends over eight minutes, showcasing Frumpy's ability to blend intricate musical passages with strong melodies. This track, along with "Singing Songs," illustrates the band's progressive rock influences, characterized by elaborate arrangements and extended instrumental sections.
On the reverse side, "I'm Afraid, Big Moon" offers a darker, more introspective sound, while “Release” continues the album's exploration of complex musical landscapes. The closing track, "Keep On Going," wraps up the experience with a more direct blues rock approach, highlighting the band’s versatility.
The album features contributions from two keyboardists. Initially, Erwin Kania, formerly of Murphy Blend, participated in the recording. Midway through the sessions, Jean-Jacques Kravetz returned to the band, adding layers to the keyboard arrangements. This duality in keyboard contributions adds depth to the album's sound. The production team included Frumpy and co-producer Thomas Kukuck, who played a significant role in shaping the album's sonic quality.
Among the standout tracks, "By The Way" and "Release" are notable for their length and complexity. "Keep On Going" serves as a fitting conclusion, offering a blend of blues rock elements with Frumpy's signature progressive style. Each song demonstrates the band's ability to weave intricate melodies and rhythms, creating a cohesive listening experience.
Frumpy's By The Way was released in 1972, and it runs for a total of 43 minutes.
