Supernova
"Supernova" is the second studio album by the Polish symphonic progressive rock band Exodus. Released in 1981 under the Polskie Nagrania Muza label, this album is cataloged as SX 2108. The recording took place at Teatr STU Studio in Kraków during October and November of the same year. This period was marked by political tension in Poland, as it was just before the introduction of Martial Law.
The album features a lineup led by guitarist Andrzej Puczyński, who also serves as the bandleader. Paweł Birula contributes lead vocals and plays the 12-string acoustic guitar, while Władysław Komendarek adds depth with his work on keyboards, synthesizers, and clavinet. Wojciech Puczyński plays bass guitar, and Zbigniew Fyk rounds out the group on drums and percussion. The band is often compared to Yes for their use of symphonic keyboards and intricate arrangements.
"Supernova" is characterized by its sweeping keyboard lines, melodic electric guitar leads, and rich acoustic textures. The lyrics are influenced by Polish poetry and often explore themes of longing and introspection. Noteworthy tracks from the album include "Powstanie Supernowej" and "Jeszcze Czekam," which exemplify the band's signature sound combining progressive elements with emotional depth. The intricate musical layers and Birula's emotive vocals create an engaging listening experience.
The engineering for "Supernova" was handled by W. Trenkler and H. Jastrzębska-Marciszewska, ensuring a polished sound that complements the band's complex arrangements. The album's recording at a prominent studio in Kraków reflects the band's commitment to quality production during a challenging time in Polish history.
This album followed Exodus's debut and further established their presence in the Polish rock scene. The release of "Supernova" was part of a broader movement of progressive rock in Poland during the early 1980s. The album's approach to symphonic rock resonates with the era's musical trends while maintaining a distinct identity. "Supernova" is available in vinyl LP format, a popular medium for music during that time.
The album was recorded in late 1981 at Teatr STU Studio in Kraków.
