In Concert
Emerson, Lake & Palmer's live album, In Concert, was released in November 1979 by Atlantic Records. This album arrived shortly after the band's disbandment, capturing performances from their 1977 Works Tour. The primary concert featured in this release took place on August 26, 1977, at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Canada. This performance was notable for its collaboration with a full orchestral ensemble, conducted by Godfrey Salmon.
The album features several tracks that exemplify the group's blend of rock and classical music. Among them is Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn," which showcases the band's ability to reinterpret popular compositions. Another standout track is "Tiger in a Spotlight," a piece that highlights the band's energetic style. Greg Lake contributes with his acoustic ballad "C'Est La Vie," offering a contrasting sound within the live set. Additionally, Carl Palmer's "The Enemy God" delivers a strong rhythmic presence, while Keith Emerson's "Piano Concerto No. 1" includes the dynamic 3rd movement, Toccata Con Fuoco. The album also presents an abridged live version of "Pictures at an Exhibition," a significant work in the band's repertoire.
Keith Emerson took charge of the album's mixing, ensuring that the live experience was well captured. Sound engineering was provided by Michel Léveillée, who worked to balance the orchestral elements with the band's performance. This attention to sound detail allowed for a more immersive listening experience, reflecting the energy and atmosphere of the live show.
In 1993, In Concert was expanded and re-released under the title Works Live. This re-release included additional content that further showcased the band's live performances. The live recordings serve as a document of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's musical journey and their unique approach to progressive rock.
