Background

Egg was a British progressive rock band formed in 1968. The group disbanded in 1972 after releasing three albums. In 1974, keyboardist Dave Stewart proposed a reunion of the original trio, consisting of himself, bassist Mont Campbell, and drummer Clive Brooks. This reunion aimed solely to record a new album, which resulted in "The Civil Surface." It was released in December 1974 on Caroline Records, a subsidiary of Virgin Records.

Musical Composition

The album features a unique blend of progressive rock and avant-garde elements. It includes contributions from several guest musicians, adding depth to the sound. Lindsay Cooper and Tim Hodgkinson, known for their work with Henry Cow, provided bassoon, oboe, and clarinet. Their instrumentation complements the band's core sound throughout the album. Notably, guitarist Steve Hillage, who had previously played with Stewart and Campbell in their earlier band Uriel, contributed guitar on the track "Wring Out The Ground (Loosely Now)."
