Exploring "Schwingungen" by Ash Ra Tempel

Released in 1972 on the Ohr label, "Schwingungen" is the second album by the German band Ash Ra Tempel. Following their debut, which was largely instrumental, this album incorporates vocals for the first time, provided by John L., also known as Manfred Peter Bruck. He previously performed with the band Agitation Free. The album marks a transition in sound, moving toward a more structured approach while still maintaining the improvisational spirit characteristic of Krautrock.

Album Structure and Themes

"Schwingungen" is divided into two distinct sides. Side A is titled "Light And Darkness" and features two tracks: "Light: Look At Your Sun" and "Darkness: Flowers Must Die." Both pieces are written by Hartmut Enke, who also plays guitar, bass, and electronics on the album. The first track lasts 6 minutes and 20 seconds, while the second extends to 12 minutes and 20 seconds, exploring themes of illumination and shadow through sound and lyrics.

Side B consists of the title track, "Schwingungen," which is 19 minutes long and divided into two parts: "Suche" and "Liebe." This side maintains the album's atmospheric quality, blending various musical elements that reflect the band's progressive rock influences. The use of guest musicians adds depth, with Matthias Wehler on alto saxophone and Uli Popp contributing bongo rhythms.

Instrumentation and Production

Wolfgang Muller, who replaced Klaus Schulze on drums and vibraphone, brings a unique texture to the album. The engineering work by Dieter Dierks contributes to the overall sound quality, ensuring that the complex arrangements are effectively captured. The album cover design, created by Bernd Bendig, complements the music's ethereal nature, presenting a visual interpretation of its themes.

The ensemble of musicians, including John L. on vocals and percussion, adds to the richness of "Schwingungen." Their collective efforts create a sonic landscape that encourages listeners to immerse themselves fully in the experience. The album reflects the experimental ethos of the early 1970s German music scene, characterized by a willingness to explore new sounds and ideas.

In total, "Schwingungen" has a runtime of 38 minutes and 40 seconds.
