Stratos Airlines
Released in 1979, Stratos Airlines is the second studio album by the French electronic space-rock band Hydravion. The album came out on the Carrere label, catalog number 67.350, and was recorded and mixed between July 1978 and April 1979 at Studio Du Chesnay near Versailles.
Hydravion's sound on this album builds upon the electronic foundation established in their 1977 debut. Philippe Besombes, the mastermind behind the project, employs a diverse range of instruments. He plays synthesizers, including the Moog and Oberheim, as well as the Mellotron, Clavinet, acoustic piano, vocoder, sitar, and guitar. His multifaceted approach contributes to the album's unique blend of genres.
The record integrates late-1970s disco-funk grooves with traditional acoustic elements, creating a rich tapestry of sound. The rhythm section features Patrick Woindrich on bass guitar and Bernard "Minet" Wantier on drums. Their collaboration with Cooky Rhinoceros, who contributes both 6-string and 12-string electric guitars, adds depth to the arrangements. Vocals are provided by Dolores De Las Palmeras, whose contributions include both lead and backing vocals.
The album features aviation themes, starting with the opening track "Passadena Airport." Other noteworthy tracks include "Télécom" and the eight-minute Eastern-influenced space epic "Singaraja." The combination of world music textures, such as flute and sitar, enhances the album's progressive rock and experimental nature. "Ligne Équateur," "Carolyn Sud," "Santander," and "L'Amour Charter" further illustrate the band's eclectic style.
Sound engineering plays a crucial role in the album's production, with Besombes and Woindrich handling the engineering tasks. The album's art direction was managed by Dolores De Las Palmeras, with the sleeve concept created by Philippe Huart. This collaborative effort reflects a cohesive vision throughout the project.
Stratos Airlines was released on vinyl LP format in 1979, contributing to the electronic and experimental rock landscape of the era.
