Released in 1974, "Original Man" is the second and final studio album by the British progressive jazz-rock band Riff Raff. This release, cataloged under RCA Victor LPL1 5023, builds upon the foundation set by their debut album with a more layered and textural sound. The album was produced by the band’s founders, Tommy Eyre and Roger Sutton. Recording took place at Richard Branson’s The Manor Studios in Oxfordshire and Olympic Studios in London between 1973 and 1974.

Musical Composition and Style

“Original Man” features a diverse array of musical influences. The album seamlessly blends elements of progressive rock with jazz-fusion and brass rock. It showcases the band’s knack for complex arrangements and intricate time signatures typical of the Canterbury scene. The opening title suite, which shares the album's name, runs 7:40 minutes and serves as an expansive introduction to the band’s musical direction.

The use of the Mellotron, Minimoog synthesizer, and electric viola adds depth to the arrangements. Tommy Eyre’s contributions on Hammond organ, electric piano, and vocals are central to the album’s sound.
