McDonald And Giles
"McDonald And Giles," released in November 1970, marks an important chapter in the careers of Ian McDonald and Michael Giles. Following their departure from King Crimson, this collaborative effort presents a shift in musical direction. The album was recorded between May and July 1970 at Island Studios in London and released under Island Records and Cotillion.
Featuring a mix of rock, art rock, and elements of Canterbury scene jazz, the album diverges from the darker tones of King Crimson. The duo self-produced the album with contributions from bassist Peter Giles, who was also part of the original King Crimson lineup. Steve Winwood, known for his work with Traffic and Blind Faith, adds an organ and piano solo on "Turnham Green," enhancing the album's diverse sound.
The album comprises five main compositions, including "Suite in C," which runs for over eleven minutes, and the monumental "Birdman," which stretches to an impressive 21:45. This suite is divided into six movements, providing a conceptual experience that showcases the duo's ambition. The track "Flight Of The Ibis" holds significance as it reuses a melody originally penned by McDonald, which would later be adapted by King Crimson into "Cadence and Cascade."
The lyrics on the album are a collaborative effort, with contributions from Peter Sinfield and BP Fallon. The arrangements benefit from the expertise of Mike Gray, who conducted the strings and brass sections. This attention to detail in orchestration adds layers to the tracks, combining rock with orchestral elements effectively.
The cover art for "McDonald And Giles," painted by Charlotte Bates, depicts the duo alongside their partners, providing a personal touch to the release. Photography by Richard DiLello complements the album's artistic vision, creating a cohesive visual presentation.
In terms of production quality, sound engineers Brian Humphries and Richard Digby Smith played crucial roles in capturing the album's intricate arrangements. The album was recorded at Island Studios, located in Basing Street, London, UK.
