Background of Fairfield Parlour

Fairfield Parlour emerged from the British band Kaleidoscope in 1969. Following a dispute with their label, Fontana, the members decided to adopt a new name for their continued musical journey. This shift allowed them to explore new creative avenues while retaining the essence of their earlier work. Their debut album, "From Home To Home," was released in August 1970 on the Vertigo label.

Musical Style and Themes

"From Home To Home" features a blend of rock, pop rock, and psychedelic rock. The album showcases the band’s evolution from their previous fairy-tale whimsy into more robust rock arrangements. The songwriting reflects a deeper engagement with folk influences, presenting intricate melodies and harmonies. Tracks like "Aries" and "Soldier Of The Flesh" exemplify this transition, incorporating both lyrical depth and varied instrumentation.

Recording and Production

The album was recorded at Morgan Studios in London and produced by David Symonds. The engineering work was handled by Jerry Boys, contributing to the album's polished sound. The arrangement features a range of instruments, including flute, Mellotron, harpsichord, and tubular bells, played by band members Steve Clark and Eddy Pumer. This rich sonic palette enhances the psychedelic elements present in the music.

Subsequent Releases

After "From Home To Home," Fairfield Parlour continued to develop their sound with the release of the double-LP concept album "White Faced Lady." This album, which tells the story of a troubled young woman's rise to fame and subsequent demise, further illustrates their artistic progression. In 2000, both "From Home To Home" and "White Faced Lady" were compiled into a double-CD set called "The Fairfield Parlour Years," which included additional tracks from non-album releases.

Album Details

Upon its release, "From Home To Home" was available in vinyl format as a gatefold LP. The album's visual design was crafted by Keef, adding an artistic layer to the physical release. The tracks are primarily written by Peter Daltrey and Eddy Pumer, who also contribute lead vocals and instrumental performances throughout the album.
