Neu! is the self-titled debut studio album by the German duo Neu!, released in 1972. The creative partnership of guitarist Michael Rother and drummer Klaus Dinger began in Düsseldorf in 1971 after they were part of an early lineup of Kraftwerk.

The album was co-produced and engineered by Conny Plank. Recording took place over four nights in December 1971 at Windrose-Dumont-Time Studios in Hamburg. The mixing was completed at Star Studios. Klaus Dinger also designed the album cover, which features a minimalist pop-art stencil logo that aligns with the aesthetic vision of the music.

Musical Style and Innovation

Neu! is known for pioneering the continuous 4/4 "motorik" drum beat, a term coined by Dinger, referring to the "lange Gerade" or long straight road. This rhythmic foundation is complemented by Rother's melodic guitar lines, often treated in reverse. The album employs phased drones, tape manipulations, and ambient noise collages to create a unique sound landscape. Such elements define the experimental nature of the album.

The album opens with the 10-minute track "Hallogallo," which serves as a motorik anthem. Other notable tracks include "Sonderangebot" and "Weissensee." The second side features a suite titled "Jahresüberblick," which consists of three segments: "Im Glück," "Negativland," and "Lieber Honig."
