Soundtracks
Released in September 1970, "Soundtracks" is the second studio album by the German band Can, issued under the Liberty label. This album consolidates the band’s diverse compositions for various avant-garde films, marking a transitional phase in their musical journey. It features music created for movies such as Roland Klick's "Deadlock" and Jerzy Skolimowski's "Deep End".
"Soundtracks" captures a significant moment in Can's history. It includes the last recordings of Malcolm Mooney, who provides lead vocals on tracks like "Soul Desert" and "She Brings The Rain". These songs reflect his unique style before he departed for the United States. Contrastingly, the album also introduces Damo Suzuki, who makes his recorded debut with tracks such as "Mother Sky" and "Don't Turn The Light On, Leave Me Alone". Suzuki's arrival marks a shift in Can's sound, showcasing a different vocal approach.
The album features seven tracks that blend elements of rock, electronic music, and experimental sounds. The centerpiece is "Mother Sky", a 14:30-minute composition driven by Jaki Liebezeit's motorik beat. This track is characterized by a relentless rhythm and a blend of pulsating bass lines from Holger Czukay and electrifying guitar work from Michael Karoli. The instrumentation creates a trance-like atmosphere, typical of Can’s innovative sound. Other tracks, like "Deadlock" and "Tango Whiskyman", further explore the band's ability to combine various musical styles.
Recording took place at Inner Space Studio in Schloss Nörvenich, Germany, between 1969 and 1970. The album features contributions from all band members: Irmin Schmidt on organ and electronic elements, Holger Czukay on bass and tape editing, and Jaki Liebezeit on drums and percussion. The production approach reflects Can's experimental ethos, blending live instrumentation with tape manipulation.
The cover design was created by Albert Leuthenmayr, adding a visual representation of the band's avant-garde approach. "Soundtracks" serves as a documentation of Can's early experimentation with sound and film, showcasing their unique position in the Krautrock movement.
"Soundtracks" consists of seven tracks that merge various genres and styles, highlighting the band's creative range.
