Paêbirú
Released in 1975 by the Solar label, Paêbirú is a double album by Brazilian artists Lula Côrtes and Zé Ramalho. This work is a distinctive part of the psychedelic scene that emerged in Recife during the Tropicalia movement. Recorded at Rozenblit Studios between October and December 1974, it reflects a unique blend of folk rock, experimental sounds, and Latin influences.
The album is divided into four sections, each named after one of the classical elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. This thematic division guides the listener through an auditory journey. The Earth section begins with "Trilha De Sumé," setting a tone that invokes natural imagery. Air follows with tracks like "Harpa Dos Ares," which explores airy soundscapes. The Fire section contains the shorter piece "Raga Dos Raios," while Water concludes with several brief tracks that flow into one another, including "Louvacao A Iemanja." The final reprise of "Trilha De Sume" brings the album full circle.
Paêbirú's recording took place in a vibrant time for Brazilian music. Shortly after its release, Recife experienced a catastrophic flood that submerged the Rozenblit pressing plant, destroying most of the original stock of the LP. This event contributed to the album’s rarity. The surviving master tape was sent to Rio de Janeiro in 1976 for remastering, which added sound effects missing from the original release.
Due to the limited number of original copies that survived the flood, Paêbirú has become a highly sought-after collector's item. Original pressings can fetch thousands of dollars in the market today. After the album, Zé Ramalho moved to Rio de Janeiro and achieved national fame with his self-titled album in 1978, which included "Chao De Giz."
