Ragnarok
The year 1975 marked the arrival of Ragnarok, a progressive and space rock band from Auckland, New Zealand. Their self-titled debut album, released on the Revolution label, showcases a unique blend of psychedelic rock elements and intricate musical arrangements. Recorded at the esteemed Stebbing Recording Studios, the album was engineered by Tony Moan and produced by one of the band's members, Andre Jayet.
The band's lineup features powerful lead vocals from Lea Maalfrid, who drives the sound with her commanding presence. The dual-drum setup, consisting of Andre Jayet and Mark Jayet, adds a rhythmic complexity that complements the band's synth-heavy instrumentation. Ramon York contributes with guitar and guitar synthesizer, while Ross Muir rounds out the sound with bass guitar and additional synthesizer textures. This combination of talents creates a rich auditory experience that is both immersive and expansive.
Musically, the album is characterized by sweeping synthesizer and Mellotron textures. The use of guitar synthesizer effects adds a layer of cosmic depth to the arrangements. Lyrically, the tracks draw inspiration from Norse mythology, which is evident in selections like "Fenris" and "Rainbow Bridge." These thematic elements enhance the overall atmosphere of the album, transporting listeners to a realm that blends myth and music.
Among the standout tracks, “Butterfly Sky” captures the essence of the band’s space rock influence, while “Fire In The Sky” showcases their melodic sensibilities. “Raga” and “Caviar Queen” further illustrate the band's ability to blend various musical styles, creating an eclectic sound that defies simple categorization. Each track offers a distinct listening experience, ensuring that the album retains its intrigue throughout.
