Le Souffle Noir
Didier Paquette's 1981 album, Le Souffle Noir, presents a unique blend of electronic and rock music, drawing inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Released on the private label F.L.V.M., this record showcases Paquette's solo artistic vision, featuring intricate compositions and varied instrumentation.
Paquette composed and arranged all seven tracks on the album, utilizing a diverse array of synthesizers and keyboards. His main instruments included the Korg PS-3100 polyphonic synthesizer, Korg MS-20, Elka Rhapsody string synthesizer, and the Mellotron. The album also features acoustic drums and percussion, combined with a Roland sequencer and Korg KR-55 drum machine. This instrumentation creates a rich soundscape that evokes the mystical elements of Tolkien's work.
The titles of the tracks reflect themes and characters from Tolkien's universe. For instance, "Les Cavaliers De Rohan" and "Le Spectre De Minas Morgul" draw directly from the lore, while "Tres Precieux Tresor De Gollum" offers a nod to one of the story’s most pivotal characters. These titles not only align with the music's themes but also indicate the narrative inspirations behind Paquette's compositions.
Bernard Lacharme contributes guitar to two tracks, adding depth to the overall sound. His work complements Paquette's keyboard-driven compositions and enhances the album's dynamic range. The collaboration enriches the listening experience, blending rock elements with electronic textures.
Original copies of Le Souffle Noir are considered rare. The album has gained traction among collectors of private-press electronic and progressive rock music. Due to its limited release, it often trades at high prices in the vinyl market. The album has been compared to the works of Richard Pinhas, though reviewers note that Paquette's style is rougher and less dark than Pinhas' electronic explorations.
