Introduction to Semiramis

Semiramis was formed in Italy in 1970 when its members were just fifteen years old. By the time they released their sole album, "Dedicato A Frazz," in 1973, the band members were transitioning into young adulthood. This progressive rock group consisted of Michele Zarrillo on guitar and vocals, his brother Maurizio Zarrillo on keyboards, Giampiero Artegiani on various guitars and synthesizers, Marcello Reddavide on bass and lyrics, and Paolo Faenza on drums. The album was released under the Trident label, catalog number TRI 1004.

Musical Composition

"Dedicato A Frazz" showcases a blend of rock and progressive elements. The album opens with "La Bottega Del Rigattiere," establishing a rich soundscape that features intricate guitar work and layered instrumentation. "Luna Park" follows, offering a more whimsical tone that contrasts with the darker themes present in other tracks. "Uno Zoo Di Vetro" delves into a metaphorical exploration of perception and reality, highlighting the lyrical contributions of Reddavide.

The second side of the album includes "Per Una Strada Affollata," which stands out for its rhythmic complexity and dynamic shifts. "Dietro Una Porta Di Carta" introduces a haunting atmosphere, while "Frazz" serves as a centerpiece, showcasing the band's musical dexterity. The album's production was overseen by Robert Cunningham, ensuring a polished sound that complements the band's artistic vision. Lucio Marioni contributed as a technician, bringing technical expertise to the recording process. The cover design, created by Gordon Faggetter, features surreal artwork that draws inspiration from Salvador Dali, enhancing the album's overall aesthetic.

Aftermath and Legacy

Following the release of "Dedicato A Frazz," Semiramis disbanded, and its members pursued different paths. Most left the music industry, but Michele Zarrillo continued to achieve success as a pop singer in Italy. The album, released in 1973, remains a unique artifact of the Italian progressive rock scene of the era.
