Tormato
"Tormato," released in September 1978, is the ninth studio album by the English progressive rock band Yes. The album was recorded between April and June 1978 at Advision Studios and RAK Studios in London. It was produced by the band themselves, with engineering assistance from Geoff Young and Nigel Luby.
This album is recognized for its innovative use of keyboard technology. Rick Wakeman contributed with the rare Birotron, a tape-loop keyboard, as well as the Polymoog Synthesizer and Hammond Organ. Additionally, Chris Squire's flanged harmonised Rickenbacker bass and Alan White’s electronic drum synthesizers added a distinct sonic layer. The band incorporated a variety of instruments, including 10-string Alvarez acoustic guitar and mandolin, played by Jon Anderson, and various guitars by Steve Howe.
The cover of "Tormato" was designed by Hipgnosis, featuring a dowsing rod locator and a splattered tomato over a photograph of Yes Tor in Devon. The band felt the original image was lackluster and opted for this more vibrant representation. The artwork reflects the band's whimsical approach to their visuals, making it a unique aspect of the album.
"Tormato" performed well commercially, reaching No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 10 on the US Billboard 200. The album also achieved RIAA Platinum certification in the United States. Among its nine tracks, the ecological anthem "Don't Kill The Whale" emerged as a hit single, while other tracks like "Madrigal" and "Onward" showcased the band’s diverse range of musical styles.
The album features contributions from guest artist Damion Anderson, who provided spoken voice on "Circus Of Heaven." String arrangements for "Madrigal" and "Onward" were crafted by Andrew Pryce Jackman. The extensive use of various instruments and high-tech recording techniques exemplifies Yes's commitment to pushing musical boundaries in the progressive rock genre. "Tormato" was released under the Atlantic label with the catalog numbers K 50518 and SD 19202.
