Introduction to Bubble Puppy

Bubble Puppy emerged from Corpus Christi, Texas, originally starting as a trio known as the Bad Seeds. The lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Rod Prince, bassist Roy Cox, and drummer Clayton Pulley. In 1967, guitarist Todd Potter joined the group, leading to a name change to Willowdale Handcar. By 1968, they settled on the name Bubble Puppy and signed with International Artists Records.

Debut Album: A Gathering Of Promises

A Gathering Of Promises is Bubble Puppy’s debut album, released in 1969. The album was recorded following the success of their hit single "Hot Smoke & Sassafras," which reached number 14 on the US charts in early 1969. The album features a blend of psychedelic rock with various influences. Tracks like "I've Got To Reach You" and "A Gathering Of Promises" highlight the band's musical style and lyrical themes.

Production and Artwork

The album was produced by Ray Rush and engineered by Hank Poole. The front cover of the album was designed at Royale Studios, while Bill Corbin III created the back cover design. This collaboration contributed to the visual presentation of the album, which aligned with the psychedelic aesthetic of the time.

Aftermath of Release

Despite the initial success of their single, A Gathering Of Promises did not achieve commercial success. Following a dispute with their label, Bubble Puppy relocated to Los Angeles. During this transition, they hired Nick St. Nicholas, a former member of Steppenwolf, as their manager. The band later changed their name to Demian as they sought a new direction.
