Trace
In September 1974, the Dutch progressive rock group Trace released their self-titled debut album on Philips (6413 500). This album marked the formation of a new supergroup, bringing together three accomplished musicians. The lineup features Rick van der Linden on various keyboards, Jaap van Eik on bass and guitar, and Pierre van der Linden on drums. Each member brought their previous experiences from notable bands, including Ekseption, Cuby + Blizzards, and Focus.
Trace's music is a unique blend of rock and classical influences, heavily featuring complex arrangements and virtuosic performances. The album consists of dynamic rock adaptations of classical pieces, including J.S. Bach's "Gaillarde" and Edvard Grieg's "The Death Of Ase" from Peer Gynt. These adaptations highlight the band's ability to merge classical music with progressive rock elements.
In addition to the adaptations, the album includes original compositions. One standout track is the 12-minute suite titled "Progression," which showcases the band's technical prowess and multi-instrumental capabilities. Another significant piece is "The Escape Of The Piper," further demonstrating their skill in crafting intricate musical landscapes. The album employs an array of keyboards, including grand pianos, Mellotrons, and ARP synthesizers, creating a rich and layered sound.
Trace was recorded between May and June 1974 at Soundpush Studios in Blaricum, Netherlands. The production team included Jan Schuurman and the band members themselves. This collaboration helped to capture the dynamic range and complexity of their sound. The result is an album that not only showcases the technical abilities of its musicians but also presents a cohesive listening experience.
Trace's debut album is an intricate fusion of rock and classical music, featuring a diverse range of instruments and compositions. It reflects the band's commitment to pushing musical boundaries. The album was released in September 1974.
