2
Madura's second studio album, titled "2" or "Madura II," was released in 1973 under Columbia Records (catalog KC 32545). The band emerged from the remnants of Bangor Flying Circus, with two core members, David "Hawk" Wolinski and Alan De Carlo, taking the lead. They were joined by Ross Salomone on drums and percussion. The album also features a guest appearance by Terry Kath, the legendary guitarist and bassist of Chicago, who contributed to the songwriting and bass guitar on select tracks.
This album holds the distinction of being the very first recording at the historic Caribou Ranch Studios in Nederland, Colorado. The studio, known for its scenic location in the Rocky Mountains, was managed by James William Guercio, who also produced the album. Guercio's previous work with bands like Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears set a high standard for production quality. Jeff Guercio served as the sound engineer, ensuring the album captured the band's dynamic range.
Madura II is characterized by a fusion of progressive jazz-rock, heavy funk grooves, and intricate vocal harmonies. The band's sound draws comparisons to other influential groups of the era, such as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Santana, and Return to Forever. The album features expansive instrumental sections and improvisation, showcasing the members' virtuosity and creativity. One of the standout tracks is "Livin' In America," co-written by Guercio and Kath, which exemplifies the album's energetic funk-rock style.
Another highlight is the eight-minute reimagining of Joe Zawinul's "Doctor Honoris Causa," a progressive fusion piece that highlights the band's ability to reinterpret classics. Other tracks like "I'm In The Mood For Love" and "Windy One" further demonstrate their eclectic approach, blending jazz and rock elements seamlessly.
