Gazeuse!
"Gazeuse!" is the 1976 release by Gong, known as "Expresso" in North America. This album marks a significant period in the evolution of the band, now under the leadership of Pierre Moerlen. The album was released by Virgin Records in the UK and France and showcases an all-instrumental approach to jazz fusion.
At the core of "Gazeuse!" is Pierre Moerlen, who plays drums and various mallet percussion instruments. His unique style is complemented by Allan Holdsworth, a guitarist known for his innovative techniques. Holdsworth's contributions include lead electric guitar and a variety of string instruments. Other notable musicians on the album include Francis Moze, who plays fretless bass guitar and acoustic piano, and Didier Malherbe, who adds tenor saxophone and flute elements.
The album was produced and engineered by Dennis MacKay, a figure with a strong reputation in the jazz fusion genre. Recorded at The Manor Studios in Oxfordshire, the sound captures a dense acoustic-mallet orchestra. This includes a trio of vibraphones and marimbas played by Pierre Moerlen, Mireille Bauer, and Benoît Moerlen. The combination of these instruments with the fast-paced jazz-rock rhythms creates a distinctive auditory experience.
Six tracks make up the album, each contributing to its dynamic flow. The opener, "Expresso," sets the tone with its energetic rhythm. "Night Illusion" offers a more atmospheric sound, while "Percolations (Part 1 & 2)" serves as a multi-part percussion exploration. The high-energy piece "Esnuria" stretches over eight minutes, showcasing the band's technical prowess. Additionally, Francis Moze's "Mireille" presents a lyrical contrast with its bass and piano arrangement.
"Gazeuse!" was recorded at The Manor Studios in late 1976.
