Release Overview

"Tic & Tac" is the sixth studio album by the Italian progressive jazz-fusion group Area, known as Area International POPular Group. Released in 1980 on the Ascolto label, this album was recorded at Fontana Studio 7 in Milan. It was the first studio release after the death of lead vocalist Demetrio Stratos in June 1979. The remaining members chose to continue as a predominantly instrumental jazz-fusion ensemble.

Album Details

The album features a lineup that includes Patrizio Fariselli on acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, and various synthesizers, Ares Tavolazzi on fretless and electric bass, and drums by Giulio Capiozzo. New to the group is tenor saxophonist Larry Nocella, who adds a fresh dynamic to their sound. Guest trumpet players Guido Guidoboni and Luciano Biasutti contribute to the album's rich texture. The engineering was handled by Maurizio Montanesi, while the sleeve art was designed by Gianni Sassi.

Musical Composition

"Tic & Tac" is characterized by its intricate blend of jazz and rock elements. The album explores Mediterranean jazz-rock fusion through complex odd meters, bebop phrasing, and funky basslines. The interplay between keyboards and saxophone is particularly virtuosic, drawing comparisons to bands like Weather Report and Return to Forever. Each track showcases a commitment to hyper-technical musicianship and rhythmic complexity, making for an engaging listening experience.
