Introduction to Still Life

Released on April 16, 1976, "Still Life" is the sixth studio album by the British progressive rock band Van Der Graaf Generator. It came out on Charisma Records, following the band's reunion and their previous album, "Godbluff." The album reflects the band's distinctive experimental sound and intricate compositions.

Recording Details

The majority of "Still Life" was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales between January 12 and 25, 1976. However, two tracks, "Pilgrims" and "La Rossa," were recorded earlier in June 1975 during the "Godbluff" sessions. This album features contributions from all band members, including Peter Hammill, who is responsible for vocals and guitar, and David Jackson, who plays various types of saxophones and flute. Guy Evans provides the drums and percussion, while Hugh Banton plays guitar, organ, piano, and bass pedals.

Thematic Elements

The album is notable for its lyrical depth and complex musical structures. The track "Childlike Faith In Childhood's End" draws inspiration from Arthur C. Clarke's science fiction novel of the same name. The narrative centers on humanity’s transformation under alien influence, a theme that resonates throughout the album. Each song presents a unique exploration of existential themes and personal introspection, delivered through Hammill's distinctive vocal style.

Track Highlights

"Pilgrims," the opening track, sets the tone with its haunting melodies and intricate arrangements. "Still Life," the title track, further develops the album's themes through its layered instrumentation and thoughtful lyrics. Another standout piece, "My Room (Waiting For Wonderland)," showcases the band's ability to blend rock with more avant-garde elements. The album closes with the expansive "Childlike Faith In Childhood's End," which runs over twelve minutes and encapsulates the album's thematic depth.

Production and Artwork

Pat Moran served as the engineer for this album, while the production was handled by Van Der Graaf Generator themselves. The front cover photography was done by Paul Brierley, with Mike Van Der Vord contributing to the back cover. The visual presentation complements the album's introspective nature, enhancing the overall experience of the music.

Conclusion

"Still Life" was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales.
