Gryphon
Gryphon is the debut album by the English band of the same name, released in June 1973 on Transatlantic Records. The band members, Richard Harvey and Brian Gulland, were students at the Royal College of Music. They formed Gryphon to blend English folk music with medieval and Renaissance instrumentation.
The album features an entirely acoustic sound, utilizing a diverse array of instruments such as crumhorns, bassoons, recorders, harpsichords, and mandolins. This rich instrumentation sets Gryphon apart from many of their contemporaries in the rock and folk genres. The tracklist includes both traditional pieces and original compositions by the band. For example, "Pastime With Good Company," a piece attributed to Henry VIII, is arranged by Gryphon to fit their unique style. Other tracks are drawn from traditional English folklore, arranged to showcase the band's distinct sound.
One of the standout tracks is "Kemp's Gig," an anonymous piece arranged by Gryphon. Its lively tempo and intricate harmonies highlight the band's ability to reinterpret traditional music. Another notable track is "The Unquiet Grave," which is known for its haunting melody and profound lyrics. The band also presents a brief original piece titled "Juniper Suite," showcasing their songwriting capabilities alongside their arrangements of historical material.
The album was produced by Adam Skeaping and Lawrence Aston, with engineering contributions from Skeaping and Nick Glennie-Smith. The artwork features an illustration by Dan Pearce, with art direction by Ann Sullivan. The band members themselves contributed to the recording, with each showcasing their instrumental talents and vocal abilities throughout the album.
Gryphon's self-titled debut captures a unique fusion of folk and classical styles, making it a distinct entry in the early 1970s music scene. The album consists of 11 tracks and has a total runtime of 36 minutes.
