Album Overview

Toad's second album, Tomorrow Blue, was released in 1972 under the Hallelujah label in Switzerland. This release followed their 1971 debut album and marked a shift in vocal duties. Guitarist Vic Vergeat took on lead vocals, a change from the previous album that featured Benjamin Jaeger. The band continued as a trio, consisting of Vergeat, bassist Werner Fröhlich, and drummer Cosimo Lampis, with guest violinist H.W. Lipsky contributing to two tracks.

Musical Direction

Tomorrow Blue presents a sound that leans more toward blues than their debut. While the album retains elements of hard rock and progressive rock, the overall tone is more melodic. The album features seven tracks, including the extended title track "Tomorrow Blue," which runs over nine minutes. Other notable tracks include "Change In Time," which spans twelve minutes, showcasing the band’s ability to weave complex arrangements with lyrical content. The music was primarily written by Vergeat and Fröhlich, with lyrics contributed by Vergeat and Andreas Baltasar Wenger on select tracks.

Production Details

The album was produced by the band in collaboration with Chris Schwegler. Martin Birch, known for his work with various rock bands, engineered the recording. The artwork for Tomorrow Blue was designed by Silvio Caduff, with photography by Christian Vogt. These elements combined to create a cohesive visual and auditory experience reflective of the early 1970s rock scene.

Band Background

Vic Vergeat, born on May 15, 1951, in Italy, had previously collaborated with the band Hawkwind before joining Toad. His contributions to the group extended beyond this album, as he was involved in subsequent recordings throughout the 1970s. Unfortunately, Vergeat passed away on November 1, 2023.
