Introduction to Blast Furnace

Blast Furnace was a Danish rock band formed in Copenhagen. They released their only album, self-titled "Blast Furnace," in 1971 under the Polydor label. The album was recorded at Rosenberg Studios, a notable location for many Danish artists at the time. Despite the promising start, the group disbanded in 1972 due to disappointing sales.

Musical Composition

The album features eleven tracks that blend elements of rock and progressive rock. Noteworthy songs include "Toytown," which runs for 7:10 and includes a cello performance by Arne Würgler, and "This Time Of Year," a 4:15 track that showcases the band's musical diversity. "Man Bites Dog" stands out with its concise 2:07 length and piano accompaniment by Tom McEwan. The album also includes the brief yet intriguing "B-Major Blast," which lasts only 20 seconds and features harmonica by Würgler.

Personnel and Contributions

The group consisted of several key members: Niels Vangkilde on acoustic and electric guitar, Arne Würgler on bass and lead vocals for two tracks, Tom McEwan on drums and percussion, and Thor Backhausen on organ, piano, and flute. Backing vocals were provided by Anne-Lise Rosberg, with additional support from Thor Backhausen and Terese Damsholt on specific tracks. The album was engineered by Freddy Hansen, and the production involved both the band and a person credited as "Casper."

Post-Breakup Activities

After the disbandment, several members found new opportunities in the music scene. Tom McEwan and Niels Vangkilde joined the band Culpeper's Orchard, contributing to their third LP released in 1972. Thor Backhausen went on to play with the Delta Blues Band and also joined Culpeper's Orchard later on. Arne Würgler pursued work with musician Benny Holst.

Conclusion

The album "Blast Furnace" was released on vinyl LP in 1971.
